Department Of Economics

The Department of Economics started functioning with the introduction of Pre-Degree course in 1981. B.A. in Economics was introduced in the year 1995 with Sociology and History as subsidiary subjects.

Economics Association regularly conducts seminars, workshops and quiz programmes.The department has a well-equipped library with adequate number of books. The department organizes many programmes of social importance. National and Inter-national seminars, workshops, poster exhibitions, quiz and meetings with parents mark the department's calendar. Social exposure programmes include visits to old age homes, hospitals, orphanages and homes for the destitute which equip the students for a healthy community life. The department publishes a manuscript magazine every year. The Department offers Human Resource Development (HRD) Club.

  • Prize instituted in memory of Fr. John Mampilly to the student who passes B.A.Economics with highest marks.
  • Ms. Sheeba Paul memorial prize to be awarded to the top scorer in Sociology/ History in the II year B.A.University examination.
  • Scholarship prize instituted by Ms. Jasmine Gopurathingal and Ms.Desina Vadakumchery to a deserving student of I year B.A. Economics.

Employability Skill Development Programme

Employment skill Development Programme was conducted for final year UG Economics students on 20th November 2019. The programme was handled by Sri.Nandakumar, Chief Career Counselor, Galaxy Educational Services. The main parameters considered in the session were how to build life growth and how to face an interview.

Orientation Class on KMAT

Career Guidance Cell in association with Department of Economics and Commerce organized an Orientation class on KMAT on 18th November 2019. The class provided for the final year UG Economics and Commerce students. The class was about how to prepare for KMAT. The resource person was Prof. Jibin George, Placement Officer, DIST, Angamaly.

Seminar on Consumer Protection Act

The Department of Economics organized a seminar on Consumer protection Act on 17th October 2019. Mr.Prince Thekkan, Consumer Protection Council President, Mr.Joseph Varghese Velliyath, RTI Council District Co-ordinator and Mr.Arjun K.Menon, Consumer Protection Education Cell Convenor handled the sessions. All the first year UG students attended the class. They focused on various laws related with consumer protection.

Freshers Day

The official welcoming of the first year students was held on 8th August 2019. All the teachers and students from the Department of Economics were participated. Seniors rendered a warm welcome to the new members. Several programmes were organized to entertain the new comers and to explore their talents.

Hiroshima day observation

Ms. Rinu K. Loius, Head, Department of History led a class on History of Hiroshima day on 6th August 2019.

Debate Competition

An inter-departmental debate competition conducted by Department of Economics in connection with the World Population Day on 19th July 2019. The topic of the debate was India's Population Growth: A Boon or a Threat. The competition has been a total number of 12 debaters from 6 departments. All the participants were very actively participated in the debate competition. Participants from the department of Economics were selected as the best team and department of English got second prize. Amritha Davis from Ist B.A. Economics is selected as the Best speaker.

Awareness Class

Department of Economics organized an awareness class on Reproductive Tract Infection on 28th June 2019. Final year nursing students of Najath college, Nursing, Aluva handled the class. They focused on women health and hygiene.
